This years Mystery Hunt begins this coming Friday, January 14, at 12 noon in Lobby 7 (the main entrance to MIT). It will last until the coin is found, probably sometime Sunday. Many teams will have warm-up activities prior to the beginning of the Hunt, and at least three teams had pre-Hunt practices today, including Forgive me, Father, it has been two years since our last mystery hunt (the Hunt winning team in 2003, which includes fellow Ducksberrian Erin and Mitra-stand-in blogger Harvey), Mayhem (the team of fellow Ducksberrian Lisa and Lex from Malkovich, still trying to win their first Hunt), and my team, Lost in Space Waffle (based out of the Simmons Hall dormitory, which looks like a space waffle). It is with great honour to share the tale of my struggle for independence growing up in a first generation home. To begin, I shall introduce you to my family. Firstly, my parents had three children together, all two years apart, me being the youngest. Both of my parents had high school diplomas, however were unsuccessful in earning a well supporting, paying job. My mom worked in an office as a clerk; although once she got pregnant she stayed at home to take care of the young children. However, once our budget started to become tight, my mom had to start working again. Unfortunately, my mom’s old position was filled by an individual with post-secondary experience. My parents would fight so constantly that they could no longer keep their marriage happy causing them to file for a divorce. This was the hardest time in my life. When my parents got the divorce I went from barely seeing my own father from working long hours to barely seeing my own mother, who had to pick up full time work as a cashier. Eventually, my dad went to live with his parents which resulting in me rarely seeing him. I knew I had to help out because my mother was now single, taking care of three kids. My mom would work three jobs trying to pay for lawyer fees for the divorce, pay bills, and take care of three young children. After seeing endless days and nights of my mom crying over finances, I promised to her life was going to be different. I developed a sense of determination to gain an education and pay for my own tuition. The struggle of coming from a first generation family has definitely opened my eyes to the harsh reality of life without post-secondary experience. My ambition to help began when I was eight. The job only paid eighty dollars a month, which I split with my brother, leaving me with only forty dollars. Eventually, when I was fourteen, I got my first real paying job at Tim Horton’s working weekends while still studying hard

In the mid-11th century, a Benedictine abbey was established in Jerusalem by merchants from Amalfi. About 30 years later, a hospital was founded next to the abbey to care for sick and poor pilgrims. Their activities included naval warfare; they armed ships and set off after Muslim pirates, and took revenge on Turkish merchants with piracy of their own. The Knights of Malta In 1522 the Hospitaller control of Rhodes came to an end with a six-month siege by Turkish leader Suleyman the Magnificent. The Knights capitulated on January 1, 1523, and left the island with those citizens who chose to accompany them. The Hospitallers were without a base until 1530, when Holy Roman emperor Charles V arranged for them to occupy the Maltese archipelago. Their presence was conditional; the most notable agreement was the presentation of a falcon to the emperors viceroy of Sicily every year. In 1565, grand master Jean Parisot de la Valette exhibited superb leadership when he stopped Suleyman the Magnificent from dislodging the Knights from their Maltese headquarters. Six years later, in 1571, a combined fleet of the Knights of Malta and several European powers virtually destroyed the Turkish navy at the Battle of Lepanto. The Knights built a new capital of Malta in honor of la Valette, which they named Valetta, where they constructed grand defenses and a hospital that attracted patients from far beyond Malta. The Last Relocation of the Knights Hospitaller The Hospitallers had returned to their original purpose. Over the centuries they gradually gave up warfare in favor of medical care and territorial administration. Then, in 1798, they lost Malta  when Napoleon  occupied the island on the way to Egypt.
