The Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem

In the mid-11th century, a Benedictine abbey was established in Jerusalem by merchants from Amalfi. About 30 years later, a hospital was founded next to the abbey to care for sick and poor pilgrims. After the success of the First Crusade  in 1099, Brother Gerard (or Gerald), the hospitals superior, expanded the hospital and set up additional hospitals along the route to the Holy Land. On February 15, 1113, the order was formally named the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem and recognized in a papal bull issued by Pope Paschal II. The Knights  Hospitaller were also known as Hospitalers, the Order of Malta, the Knights of Malta. From 1113 to 1309 they were known as the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem; from 1309 to 1522 they went by the Order of the Knights of Rhodes; from 1530 to 1798 they were the Sovereign and Military Order of the Knights of Malta; from 1834 to 1961 they were the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem; and from 1961 to the present they are formally known as the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta. Hospitaller Knights In 1120, Raymond de Puy (a.k.a. Raymond of Provence) succeeded Gerard as leader of the order. He replaced the Benedictine Rule with the Augustinian Rule and actively began to build up the orders power base, helping the organization to acquire lands and wealth. Possibly inspired by the Templars, the Hospitallers began to take up arms in order to protect pilgrims as well as tend their illnesses and injuries. Hospitaller Knights were still monks and continued to follow their vows of personal poverty, obedience, and celibacy. The order also included chaplains and brothers who did not take up arms. Relocations of the Hospitallers The shifting fortunes of the western Crusaders would also affect the Hospitallers. In 1187, when Saladin captured Jerusalem, the Hospitaller Knights moved their headquarters to Margat, then to Acre ten years later. With the fall of Acre in 1291 they moved to Limassol in Cyprus. The Knights of Rhodes In 1309 the Hospitallers acquired the island of Rhodes. The grand master of the order, who was elected for life (if confirmed by the pope), ruled Rhodes as an independent state, minting coins and exercising other rights of sovereignty. When the Knights of the Temple were dispersed, some surviving Templars joined the ranks at Rhodes. The knights were now more warrior than hospitaller, though they remained a monastic brotherhood. Their activities included naval warfare; they armed ships and set off after Muslim pirates, and took revenge on Turkish merchants with piracy of their own. The Knights of Malta In 1522 the Hospitaller control of Rhodes came to an end with a six-month siege by Turkish leader Suleyman the Magnificent. The Knights capitulated on January 1, 1523, and left the island with those citizens who chose to accompany them. The Hospitallers were without a base until 1530, when Holy Roman emperor Charles V arranged for them to occupy the Maltese archipelago. Their presence was conditional; the most notable agreement was the presentation of a falcon to the emperors viceroy of Sicily every year. In 1565, grand master Jean Parisot de la Valette exhibited superb leadership when he stopped Suleyman the Magnificent from dislodging the Knights from their Maltese headquarters. Six years later, in 1571, a combined fleet of the Knights of Malta and several European powers virtually destroyed the Turkish navy at the Battle of Lepanto. The Knights built a new capital of Malta in honor of la Valette, which they named Valetta, where they constructed grand defenses and a hospital that attracted patients from far beyond Malta. The Last Relocation of the Knights Hospitaller The Hospitallers had returned to their original purpose. Over the centuries they gradually gave up warfare in favor of medical care and territorial administration. Then, in 1798, they lost Malta  when Napoleon  occupied the island on the way to Egypt. For a short time they returned under the auspices of the Treaty of Amiens (1802), but when the 1814 Treaty of Paris gave the archipelago to Britain, the Hospitallers left once more. They at last settled permanently in Rome in 1834. Membership of the Knights Hospitaller Although nobility was not required to join the monastic order, it was required to be a Hospitaller Knight. As time went on this requirement grew more strict, from proving nobility of both parents to that of all grandparents for four generations. A variety of knightly classifications evolved to accommodate lesser knights and those who gave up their vows to marry, yet remained affiliated with the order. Today, only Roman Catholics may become Hospitallers, and the governing knights must prove the nobility of their four grandparents for two centuries. The Hospitallers Today After 1805 the order was led by lieutenants until the office of Grand Master was restored by Pope Leo XIII in 1879. In 1961 a new constitution was adopted in which the orders religious and the sovereign status was precisely defined. Although the order no longer governs any territory, it does issue passports, and it is recognized as a sovereign nation by the Vatican and some Catholic European nations.

Meditation Essay Example

Meditation Essay Natalie Bausone December 6, 2010 Dr. Sirlin Ace-001 English – Persuasive Essay With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. It often feels like there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient, , and frustrated. It can even affect our health. A simple ten or fifteen minute meditation a day can help you to overcome your stress and find some inner peace and balance. Meditation provides benefits to all of the major categories of human existence:   Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual. Nevertheless, the term â€Å"meditation† is usually associated with hippies sitting around chanting â€Å"Ohmmm†. I have a couple family members that do feel this way. One disadvantage in meditation can be that some individuals connect it to eastern religions such as Buddhism or Hinduism. By relating meditation to these religions it tends to turn some people away from the practice of meditation. Another disadvantage is â€Å"time†. Some individuals say that it takes too much time out of their normal day to practice meditation. However, one of the largest challenges faced by people today is overcoming the stress produced by everyday life. I know family and friends that take anti-depressants in order tothe deal with the stresses of everyday life. Meditation, on the other hand, provides a natural means of reducing stress and anxiety and can lead to enhanced mental health either in combination with, or in place of, popular anti-depressants. The improved mental health that can result from meditation can be seen in many ways. It generally gives you the perspective you need to manage your busy schedule and bring back a feeling of I can handle this. The greater flow of oxygen increases levels of energy decreases high blood pressure and also makes falling asleep and soundly easier. My husband had a anxiety attack one evening. He decided to sit at the edge of the bed and begin meditation. He concentrated greatly on his deep breaths and within 2 minutes his body was balanced; it was amazing. A technique of meditation known as Yoga is considered to be active meditation, which facilitates proper blood circulation and stretching of the muscles. This technique directly helps with strengthening the muscles which produces more of a physical benefit than other technique. So no matter which technique you use you are sure to receive numerous health benefits through meditation. The result of this de-stressing, or relaxation is to improve all of the major bodily functions and can arguably lead to enhance immune, cardiovascular, digestive, and reproductive health. The main advantage for me is Spirituality, in general, a state of being. Trying to describe it is difficult, as it can be different for each individual. Nevertheless, spirituality can be described in a very general manner as a sense of connectedness with that which surrounds us. Primarily, it allows the individual to explore his or her own mind, resulting in self-awareness or connectedness that removes the individual from the thoughtless unthinkdaily grind that can be soul-sucking and which can detract from a life well lived. The connectedness goes beyond the self, and generally brings the individual into the present, as opposed to worrying about or being concerned with the past and the future. I attend self-development classes and feel that this leads to connection with the people and things around us, resulting in an enhanced spirituality that is very beneficial to me. Incorporating meditation into your lifestyle is painless, low-cost, and easily accessible. There are a number of ways you can start. You could go the old-fashioned route and pick up a meditation music CD from your local Target or Barnes and Nobles. This might work for some but many people find it difficult to meditate on their own right away. A great tool that’s now available for free thanks to the internet is is meditation podcasts. For those not familiar with podcasts, go to www. themeditationpodcast. com. You can also find local yoga lessons or a Zen meditation center. So recharge your life and your brain. It’s simply spending some time focusing your thoughts and concentrating on a single goal: relaxation! | |

The Combine A Mixed Blessing essays

The Combine A Mixed Blessing essays On the surface, the Combine would appear to be a good thing for society in general. People who are presumably unproductive and perhaps dangerous both to themselves and society are taken off the streets and put into a highly controlled environment. By removing these people from society, the rest of us can go about our business without the need to have contact with or provide support for people who have been deemed crazy. A closer look at the impact of the Combine on society reveals many flaws however in the way that system operates. The most important issues that emerge from this examination are the development of a nuthouse subculture, the institutional abuse of patients and, the removal from society of elements that should instead act as a reminder to all of us that sound minds and bodies should not be taken for granted. In One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Ken Kesey describes an environment where people in the nuthouse are grouped into specific classes and characterizations. Younger patients are known as Acutes because the doctors figure them still sick enough to be fixed. (p.19) Chronics, who are in for good, (p.19) are kept in just to keep them from walking around the street giving the product a bad name. (p.19) Others are simply known by whatever trait seems to dominate either their appearance or their personality. And in charge, there is Big Nurse. It becomes obvious as the book progresses that everyone also falls into one of three categories: bosses, lackeys, and victims. Indeed, the only normal people are visitors who are led on a tour by that fool Public Relations man who is overjoyed...that mental hospitals have eliminated all the old-fashion cruelty.(p.14) Bosses, like Big Nurse, are all powerful and yet are mysteriously governed by rules that are devised by unseen forces. Interestingly, on ly in t...

The Theory of Utilitarianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

The Theory of Utilitarianism - Essay Example This paper illustrates that the actions of Cooper meet utilitarianism by the fact that the outcome of his actions benefits both himself and others. His liver donation helps the family of those who are in need of the organ and brings joy to that family. Cooper’s actions also make him and his family happy for the act of saving another person’s life through considering their previous experience. Furthermore, everybody who knows him acknowledges his action as the right thing. Our actions according to utilitarianism should emulate Cooper’s in ensuring benefits to the majority and not a single individual. In our daily actions and decision, we should consider benefits to others and not personal gains. Cooper does this and goes far enough to ensure that he saves the life an anonymous individual and feel right while risking his own. However, act like that of Cooper is too extreme in risking personal life while there are many other options that can benefit the majority. Co oper and his family passed through fear of all the risks before and during the surgery.

Intranet Functionality PowerPoint Presentation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Intranet Functionality - PowerPoint Presentation Example In a hospital setting, the intranet is essential in facilitating communication, information publishing, interaction, collaboration, and online administration, directions to and within the hospital, digital forms, as well as web-based and intranet-enabled medical resources (Ong et al., n.p.). Specifically, these are functions that facilitate a smooth operation within the hospital; thus eliminating the prospect of medical errors. The intranet is an ideal platform to ensure effective and efficient communication within the firm. Precisely, the administration can use the web to post important memos or posters on various issues concerning the welfare of the workers or the patients. For example, it is important to pass email communication from the management to the workers (Ong et al., n.p.). In addition, it is appropriate for online administration where workers fill an activity for that record their daily duties including the time they arrived at the workstation and the time they left. However, for this to be effective, the intranet should be limited such that it is only accessible when an individual is within the hospital. The intranet is used for the other outlined activities to ensure proper communication; information sharing and interactions facilitate teamwork and improve the health care services within the firm (Ong et al., n.p.). Based on the functions of the intranet and its importance in a hospital setting, its maintenance and updating require qualified personnel on IT and management related competence. Specifically, the department and individuals mandated with the maintenance of the database should have vast experience of the working of the organization or have an assistant who has worked with the firm for some time (Ong et al., n.p.). Since the database requires occasional updating to provide information about the daily activities of the organization, the ideal decision is to establish an IT department that deals with the maintenance and
